MEIER- PERLA-WINDFELD

Live At Bird's Eye Basel is a different story. Here Meier plays with a sax-bass-drums trio which he shows emotional solos, sometimes with a raw tone that evoked associations to me with the underrated Carlos Ward. The album opens and closes with compositions of the saxophonist, and between them a number of standards and two ballads: Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes" and "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love" by Charles Mingus. The trio can be heard here in a strong, understated side. In fact, ballads separate themselves as sheep from the goats. And jumpy and jubilant 'Tico' made me think of the brilliant version of Paul Motian with Lee Konitz in the lead. Hats off, gentlemen.
